Practical sessions with couples and families focus on the goals, feelings, and relationships that members share. And the distinction between couple or family is often secondary to the more important issues involved.
There are many books written on couples and family work, yet few authors mention the need to transcend the level of confrontation and to explore the way in which couples or family members relate and connect to each other or to one another - or that the connection is shared. Yet, what they perceive in one another - good or bad - is actually part of their deeper selves. Becoming aware of that interconnectedness allows the conflict to enter a more fundamental phase, of which none of the members was probably previously aware. This helps us identify and work through fundamental issues on deeper levels than conflict and confrontation.
Few authors allow dreams to emerge in couples and families. Dreams in couples or families let edges and visions of the group become perceptible, and are essential in defining the group's field - of what is and what needs to be taken into account, sorted and integrated. Dreams can come from any member of the group, from children especially; they are moreover, independent of the role that the person normally plays or assumes in the group, yet they are intimately group-related. They present marginal glimpses of what is just beyond the horizon of awareness of a group, and most often need to be treated as voices of a group field or "channels". They are peripheral manifestations, if you wish, of steps needed for a group's growth and eventual resolution of the current conflict.
Considering the importance of family experience - or lack of it for some - for a young person and for our larger community and world, we all need to consider what exactly we want to pass on to future generations, and we now have that opportunity.
