Process Conflict Management and Resolution
General Conflict Management
If differences and disagreements cannot be reconciled by meetings and discussion, it is advantageous to consider them conflicts in order to facilitate communication and processing of the issues involved. Containing the spread of a conflict is the first important step.
- Organizational and group conflicts are symptoms of the need to become aware of new conditions resulting from internal causes within the organization or group and external changes in the larger environment.
- Process methodology shows that conflicts are not logical. Simply discussing grievances and differences does not address the underling causes of conflict. There is more at stake as the saying goes, than what meets the eye.
- Recognizing the diversity of differences of a particular conflict and not suppressing them creates a working atmosphere of trust. Participants typically drop their angry attitudes as they feel increasingly acknowledged as the process progresses.
Group Conflict Management and Open Forums
- For larger groups from 12-15 people up to 150, Open Forums represent an incremental means of dealing with group or organizational conflict.
- A support staff of a minimum of 10% of the total group including volunteers from the group provides additional containment and facilitates the resolution process.
- Open Forums use field theory from physics to allow the underlying issues to emerge. Purely verbal discussion or debate only identifies the presenting issues, and does not allow for deeper work to achieve longer-lasting results.

The resulting solutions most often require adaptive change within an organization to promote sustainability and growth. Frequently, developing new strategic axes and strengths follows. In a larger perspective, this is known as organizational evolution.
